Terracina, Historic Center

The 11th century duomo dominates the Municipal Plaza in the old town.

.

.Terracina's historic center was originally the Roman forum. Following World War II numerous ruins of the Capitoline Temple of the 1st century BCE were uncovered in the rubble. The Duomo (pictured above), located on the Municipal Plaza, is the most important building in the city. Built in the shell of an Augustan temple, its eighteen steps leading up to the facade were the original Roman steps. The facade has a portico with six ancient columns on medieval bases. The 13th century Romanesque- Gothic campanile is considered to be one of the finest towers in Latium. The church, which is dedicated to San Cesareo, contains a spiral Easter candlestick (dated 1241), a Cosmatesque ambo from the middle of the 13th century, and a superb mosaic floor.

.Also located on the Municipal Plaza is the Archaeology Museum containing material ranging from the 4th century to the 1st century BCE, and the Palazzo Vendittidating from the first half of the 14th century.
