Terracina Historic Center Map and Tourist Sites |
The green area in the map represents the historic center of Terracina which was originally the Roman Forum. The ancient Roman Appian Way, which went through Terracina, was the first and most famous of Rome's long-distance military-commercial highways. Villages and towns along the Appian way benefitted from the traffic of goods moving overland from the southern ports into Rome. The old Appian Way, now called Via Appio Nuova, is still Terracina's main street.

Duomo |
The most important building in the city. Built in the shell of an Augustan temple, its eighteen steps leading up to the facade are the original Roman steps. The facade has a portico with six ancient columns on medieval bases. The 13th century Romanesque- Gothic campanile is considered to be one of the finest towers in Latium. The church, which is dedicated to San Cesareo, contains a spiral Easter candlestick (dated 1241), a Cosmatesque ambo from the middle of the 13th century, and a superb mosaic floor. |
