CITY MAP | TOURIST SITES

.The green area in the map represents the old town of Fondi which has pre-Roman, Roman, and medieval ruins. Roman towns were surrounded by walls and divided into four quarters by two main streets which intersected at right angles and ended in gateways. Fondi retains its Roman town plan. Roman streets were paved with large flagstones and many of these flagstones are still in evidence throughout Fondi.

.The ancient Roman Appian Way, which went through Fondi, was the first and most famous of Rome's long-distance military-commercial highways. Villages and towns along the Appian way benefitted from the traffic of goods moving overland from the southern ports into Rome. The old Appian Way, now called Corso Appio Claudio in Fondi, is still Fondi's main shopping street.

.Because Fondi is not a tourist area, we had difficulty finding a map of the town. However, we located a poster for a 1994 festival which consisted of a map of greater Fondi. I used that map and its legend to pinpoint areas of tourist interest. Because the map is several years old, I cannot guarantee that the parking areas still exist as indicated. The best way to see the town is to find a place to park and then walk. It is a small area and easily seen in a day.
