.At left is an example of an etched palm leaf. The image of shiva was etched on the palm leaf with an iron pen. Then the outline was rubbed with lamp black. This item was given to us by Cross Cultural Solutions.

.India has an exciting range of handicrafts for sale. Shopping can be done in government-run emporia, arcades in larger hotels, or in the street bazaars. Where ever you decide to shop, be sure to read a good travel book before you go to learn important tips on bargaining, how to avoid touts and much more. Examples of other shopping ideas are:

  • Jootis - goat or sheep skin shoes decorated with colorful needle work.
  • Mojris - traditional slippers with up-turned toes made from camel skin.
  • Rajasthani cotton quilts
  • Glass and plastic bangles
  • Enameled work-including jewelry and boxes
  • Carpets and Durries
  • Silks
  • Lacquered work
  • Marble carvings
  • Terracotta pots
  • Paper kites
  • Shawls

.For an overview of Indian crafts before you head for the shops, consider a visit to the Crafts Museum in Delhi.
