This temple, dedicated to Harihara, is from the mid 8th century. Harihara is a particular force of deity consisting of Vishnu and Shiva conjointly. Shiva is the god of destruction and Vishnu is the preserver.
Hindu temples are designed to accommodate a deity rather than crowds of believers in a collective ceremony. They are often decorated with ornaments and sculptures illustrating myths of the Hindu pantheon.
