On Saturday February, 10 we visited the Home Sciences Department of the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur to learn more about urban university students.
During our visit, we visited the food preparation area. Here students learn about nutrition and how to prepare foods that are appropriate for the Indian diet. Later, we sat and talked to some of the girls. We were surprised to learn that some girls--especially those from rural areas--found being away from their families and in the university difficult. One girl said she didn't want to be there. Another said that she felt compelled by her parents to attend. However, others expressed a sense of adventure and enjoyed being away from home.
Although India has had great success with higher education, millions of Indians continue to be deprived of the opportunity to learn. A 1991 survey showed that 61 percent of women and 36 percent of men aged seven and above were unable to read. The girls we spoke to at the university clearly were educated. Although these girls are not pursuing careers in medicine, science or law, their higher education is important for their children's future.
