Dundlod is a small village in the semi-desert region of Shekhawati 137 miles west of Delhi. Shekhawati is situated west of the Aravallis mountain range which blocks the rain bearing clouds of the monsoon on their westward move. Despite its aridity, the region supports many villages. The people here depend upon crops of millet or pulses, the yields of which are dependant upon the annual monsoon. A good rainfall will provide a reasonable crop and any surplus is stored in mud granaries. The land also provides enough forage for sheep and goats. Camels are the primary form of transport as we noticed shortly after leaving Delhi during our trip to dundlod.
The Shekhawati region is known for its painted Havelis or mansions. Few tourists come to this region although it is becoming more popular as a tourist destination. The painted Havelis can be seen in many towns and villages in the area, including Dundlod.
