The Taj Mahal was built by Mughul emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth to their 14th child. Shah Jahan fell in love with Mumtaz and defied convention by seeking her hand in marriage. Married for nineteen years, it is said that she ruled by his side as an equal. He was so distraught by her death that he built the Taj Mahal as a monument of his love for her.
