The Bahá'í Temple stands on top of Kalkaji Hill, near the suburb of Greater Kailash in south Delhi. The temple was built from funds donated from Bahá'í devotees from around the globe. Made from Rajasthani Macrana marble, it is set in well-tended gardens and is surrounded by nine pools and walkways. Each walkway leads to a separate entrance denoting the many paths leading to God. It is one of seven Bahá'í temples built throughout the world.
The Bahá'í Faith is an independent world religion, divine in origin, all-embracing in scope, broad in its outlook, scientific in its method, humanitarian in its principles and dynamic in the influence it exerts on the hearts and minds of men. It upholds the unity of God, recognizes the unity of His Prophets and inculcates the principle of oneness and the wholeness of the entire human race.
The Bahá'í Faith began in Iran in 1844 by Baha'u'llah, a Persian nobleman, who publicly proclaimed himself the "Promised One". Baha'u'llah claimed that he was entrusted with a message from God that the path to religious truth lay in the spiritual and social unification of the world. His teachings were considered heresy by the religious orthodoxy and he spent his remaining years in exile in Constantinople, Adrianople, and finally Palestine. He was persecuted and finally martyred in 1850. He passed away in 1892. His remains were laid to rest at Bahji, facing Mount Carmel.
The Bahá'í Faith has spread far from its origins in Iran. Today, more than 2112 different ethnic groups from over 360 countries, territories and islands embrace the Bahá'í Faith. The Bahá'í Faith has accredited representation at the United Nations Headquarters, both nationally and internationally as a non-government organization (NGO). It has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ESOSOC) and with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). In addition, many Bahá'í National Assemblies are officially listed with Office of the United Nations Information Centers.
